In 2015 Young at Heart Musical Theatre for Seniors brings to its audiences the music and life story of one of Christianity’s best-loved hymn writers. Blind from infancy, Fanny J. Crosby overcame incredible odds to become a renowned musician, poet, and social activist. First published in the last half of the nineteenth century, her hymn lyrics are still sung around the world today. Congregations continue to worship with the familiar words of praise in such songs as “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”, “To God Be the Glory”, “All the Way My Saviour Leads Me”, “Praise Him, Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer”, “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour”, “Jesus Is Tenderly Calling” and, of course, “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine”.
Veteran Island performers Pamela Campbell and Nancy Beck explore Crosby’s experiences and music in their newest collaboration, Blessed Assurance: the Story and Songs of Fanny J. Crosby. Over the years Pam and Nancy have pooled their considerable talents in numerous original productions, including For the Love O’ Burns, Wingin’ It!, and A Nightingale Sang. They toured previously for Young at Heart with their delightful Amazing Gracie. Now they’re focussing all their energies on Blessed Assurance for what promises to be a joy-filled hour of captivating storytelling and vibrant hymn-singing. And they won’t be doing it on their own! Song sheets will be provided and audiences will be encouraged to join in on all their favourite hymns!
The show will tour to various seniors’ venues and community halls from March 16 to the end of April. There will be a special public performance on March 27th at 7pm at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlottetown, with a reception following the show. To reserve tickets, please call St. Paul’s at (902) 892-1681. There are still some dates available if your group or organization would like to book the show. On November 9, 2014, Pam and Nancy previewed Blessed Assurance before an enthusiastic Summerside crowd. Here are a few audience comments about the show:
An outstanding performance about a very interesting, amazing and inspirational lady! The performance was professional, heart-felt and heart-warming. The actresses shared their love of music and joy of performing with all who attended. The audience also appreciated the invitations to sing along on many of Fanny Crosby’s
well-known and well-loved hymns. A wonderful performance—a gift to all who attended!
The audience’s enthusiastic response was an indication of how very much they enjoyed Blessed Assurance. One of the special qualities of the performance was the energy. Pam and Nancy work so well together. A very enjoyable, informative and entertaining afternoon!
Enjoyed Blessed Assurance greatly. Such a courageous lady with a wonderful story, portrayed by two fine actors.
Blessed Assurance was a very entertaining performance. We really enjoyed the wonderful variety of music, historical background, acting and the energy brought to the performance. We now truly appreciate
the wonder of Fannie Crosby.
So well-done. It captured the audience from the beginning. The show was colourful, humorous and engaging.
I liked that the performance portrayed Crosby as an astute intellectual and a free spirit. Many of the hymns were familiar to the audience as people were brought up on most of these hymns. Campbell and Beck made us feel Crosby was one of our own.
Funny, yet very moving. Fascinating story and wonderful music. Enjoyed every moment!
